Older investors need our protection. In a recent survey conducted by IRI, roughly 40 percent of financial advisors see cases of suspected financial abuse of elder investors several times a year. And about 40 percent have confirmed at least one or two cases of elder financial abuse within the last three years.

As a moral imperative, IRI is providing retirement industry leadership and working to affect positive change in a number of ways:

  • Advocating for legislation that protects elder investors and provides assurances for financial advisors who report their suspicions
  • Providing training guides and resources for financial advisors, with direction on how to identify it and where to report it
  • Raising the awareness level through Capitol Hill panels, research, fact sheets, social and earned media

We invite to join our charge to protect vulnerable seniors. Millions of retirees are now facing diminished capacity as they age. and millions more  baby boomers will be entering retirement in the coming years. They need our help and our industry needs to be vigilant to remain strong. Join us.

As part of this initiative, be on the lookout for the "Save the Date" on our Older Investors Summit, to be held in October.

The Older Investors Summit will:

  • Examine the issue in its many and varied manifestations.
  • Network with high level industry peers in an intimate setting in Washington, D.C.
  • Bring together the financial services industry, police and prosecutors, consumer advocates, federal and state regulators, researchers and adult protective services to learn what role each plays in addressing elder financial abuse.
  • Present innovative and successful best practices from a range of systems.
  • Strategize on how best to coordinate information, strategies and tactics to strengthen the prevention, identification and prosecution of elder financial abuse.
