In light of IRI President and CEO Cathy Weatherford’s announced intention to retire at the end of 2018, IRI’s Board of Directors is conducting a search to recruit her replacement. The accelerating pace of change in the retirement income landscape, as well as IRI’s outstanding track record of the last decade under Cathy’s leadership, requires the association to seek an extraordinary individual for its leadership.

Founded in 1990, this financial services association is the leading voice for retirement income security for Americans, representing all members of the value chain, including insurers, asset managers, distributors, broker-dealers, banks, financial advisors, and solutions providers. With over 700-member firms, the association provides a wide range of value-added services, including data collection and dissemination, research, standards-based publications, government relations,member education, and local and national conferences. 

The Role

Reporting Relations

The President will report to the Board of Directors and manage a team of 20+ staff through direct reports in legal, finance, events, marketing/communications, research, and government relations, as well as oversee and manage strategic outsourcing partnerships.


IRI stands at the gateway to one of the most profound shifts to confront the financial services industry in decades as investors seeking retirement security move from asset accumulation to retirement income solutions as a guiding strategy. The next President will inherit a robust organization and be responsible for stewarding this future opportunity through working with Association members to insure that they are considered the thought leader for cradle-to-grave retirement income solutions.


  • Continue a strong tradition of the Association as an authoritative leading voice on all  retirement related matters guiding policymakers and regulators at both the national and state  level.
  • Assist the Board in a constant refinement of the mission statement necessary to stay
    relevant in the crowded financial services association field.
  • Bring together the multiple business missions of members in a rapidly changing market to speak with one voice at the national level, including:
    • Representing every link in the retirement income supply chain
    • Remaining the leading voice for the insured income industry
    • Persisting as the definitive source for retirement solution education, research and advocacy.
  • Continue to expand the use of efficient technology tools to make data collection and dissemination, standards, research, and education more interactive and accessible to members.
  • Take direct responsibility for developing and executing member and vendor expansion programs in light of the expanding focus on all elements of the retirement income value chain.
  • Continue the aggressive expansion of a philosophy of "members as customers," which is necessary for the association to remain useful and relevant to industry participants during a period of dynamic change.
  • Meet the rising expectations of members through extensive outreach in the field in direct meetings outside of normal conference schedules.
  • Work with the staff to support member sponsored initiatives, and promote dynamic and evolving Committee structures reporting to the Board.
